Author: Patrick Ness Publisher: Walker Books Release Date: May 4th 2017 Genre: YA, Contemporary Pages: 287 ––– Inspired by Mrs Dalloway and Judy Blume's Forever, Release is one day in the life of Adam Thorn, 17. It's a big day. Things go wrong. It's intense, and all the while, weirdness approaches...
Adam Thorn is having what will turn out to be the most unsettling, difficult day of his life, with relationships fracturing, a harrowing incident at work, and a showdown between this gay teen and his preacher father that changes everything. It's a day of confrontation, running, sex, love, heartbreak, and maybe, just maybe, hope. He won't come out of it unchanged. And all the while, lurking at the edges of the story, something extraordinary and unsettling is on a collision course. ––– I will not be able to stop talking about this book for a long time. It was incredibly written. It was without a doubt my favourite Patrick Ness book and quite possible one of the best, if not the best YA novels ever written.
Adam Thorn is one of my new favourite YA characters. He’s a pure cinnamon roll who needs to be protected at all costs. I just think he was so well written – he’s relatable, he makes mistakes, he’s struggling with pressure like most teenagers are and he’s funny at the same time. I shipped him and Linus so much. I’ll admit that him and Enzo were my guilty ship for most of it. The plot was so fascinating and so well thought. I’m glad that it took course over just one day and it was written much better in this narrative. It’s just, simply, wow. Such a beautiful coming-of-age story and his writing style is just special and breathtaking. Such an empathetic writer and one who really knows how to portray every emotion. Very talented indeed. The story is incredibly engrossing and I managed to finish this quite quickly. Characters such as Angela and Martin really added to the story and the part with the Queen and Katherine were weaved into Adam’s story so well! This is just, quite simply, and outstanding piece of literature and I urge everyone to go read this when it’s out!!
5 out of 5 stars and thank you so much to my book club mentor for lending me this ARC!
