Author: V. E. Schwab Publisher: Titan Books Release Date: February 27th 2015 Genre: Fantasy, YA Pages: 384 --- Kell is one of the last travelers--magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes connected by one magical city.
There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, and with one mad King--George III. Red London, where life and magic are revered--and where Kell was raised alongside Rhy Maresh, the roguish heir to a flourishing empire. White London--a place where people fight to control magic and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London. But no one speaks of that now.
Officially, Kell is the Red traveler, ambassador of the Maresh empire, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.
Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.
Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive. --- I’m just going to say it: HOLY SHIT.
This book was incredible. Here starts my gushing of this… but oh my god. Seriously. A friend of mine lent me the first two books in this series and I took my time starting them. But I regret taking so long, I really wish I had have read this sooner. It’s just amazing!!
Firstly, we’ll start with the characters. Kell, Lila, Rhy...wow. Just wow. They were so unique and had such strong voices and they were so badass and loveable and mysterious and aaaaah!! Everything about this intrigued me so much.
Next, the setting. Having the book set in not just one, but FOUR Londons - was such an amazing idea!! They were SO interesting to read about. So well thought out and well written. I enjoyed this so so so much. The Kings and Queens of each individual London were the best villains too.
And finally, the plot. I love the whole mystery of this. How Kell or Lila didn’t know what the mysterious stone was that linked them to Black London. And learning about them as characters up until they met was so incredibly fascinating!!
I honestly don’t have a bad word to say about this. I cannot wait to read the next two books and everything else Schwab has written!!
